 Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to establish the criteria and process regarding faculty emeritus at Northeast State Community College

 Policy: Full-time tenured faculty who have served Northeast State Community College for a minimum of 15 years and who are eligible for state retirement benefits, who have made significant contributions and service to the college, and who have retired in good standing from Northeast State’s Academic Affairs Office shall be considered for emeritus faculty status upon retirement. The candidate for Faculty Emeritus must be recommended for emeritus status within 2 years from the date of retirement.


Emeritus faculty shall be entitled to the following privileges normally available to current faculty:

•         access to library

•         faculty parking permit at no charge

•         access to all commonly available college facilities

•         free entry to all campus events (e.g. Cultural Activities, Student Activities…)

These privileges shall carry the same responsibilities required of regular faculty. Designation as emeritus faculty shall be at the discretion of the College President. Faculty who are terminated for cause shall be ineligible for emeritus status.

 How to Recommend/Nominate an Individual for Faculty Emeritus Status:

1.     To recommend a candidate for Faculty Emeritus, a nomination letter must be submitted to the Vice President for Academic Affairs by October 1 of any calendar year during the two year period from the date of faculty member’s retirement.

 2.     The nomination letter must include must include the retired faculty member’s name and a brief narrative (no more than two pages) outlining the candidate’s teaching career. The narrative can be in paragraph or bullet list format. The narrative should include (but is not necessarily limited to) any special achievements the retired faculty attained while teaching (i.e. program coordinator, department dean, lead teacher, etc.); service to the college (i.e. committee work, participation in Faculty Senate, participation in faculty and college events, coordinating student groups, Foundation activities, etc.); any teaching awards earned (i.e. teacher of the year, excellence in teaching, classroom innovation, etc.); and service to the community. The narrative must demonstrate that the retired faculty member performed classroom teaching and service to the college above the minimum requirements of the faculty position descriptions.

 3.       A tenured faculty member or academic dean may also initiate the application process on behalf of a qualified candidate (or for a posthumous recommendation), provided the recommendation is made within defined time limits and demonstrates the requirements above.

 The following outlines a draft process for the review nomination letters:

1.       The vice president for Academic Affairs will by November 1 call a meeting of the Faculty Emeritus Review Committee (one representative from each academic division) and Academic Council and provide the nomination letters for review and consideration.

 2.       The Faculty Emeritus Review Committee and Academic Council shall review the letters and provide to the vice president for Academic Affairs by December 1 the committee’s recommendation.

 3.     The vice president for Academic Affairs by January 1 will review the recommendations and inform the president of his/her recommendation.

 4.     The president will notify the candidates by March 1 being considered for emeritus of his/her decision regarding Faculty Emeritus Status. There shall be one Faculty Emeritus awarded annually.
